The Best Places to Fish in Talladega County, AL

If you’re an avid fisherman you’ve probably been fishing for years and know all your favorite spots along with everything you need to prepare for your fishing expedition. However, if you’re new to the fishing game or just moved to the area you may not know everything you are needing for a successful fishing trip. So, here’s what you’ll need to know before you go fishing in Talladega County, Alabama.

First thing you’ll need is a permit. In most states this would be pretty straightforward because it’s more of a one type fits all. Alabama is different in that you have an option between saltwater fishing and freshwater fishing and each requires its own permit. All permits expire on August 31st so you’ll also want to make sure your license is current. You can purchase a license either online or in person. If you purchase online you’ll be able to print off your license instead of waiting for it to be mailed to you. There are also different licenses for residents of Alabama and non-residents.

Next you’ll need to know how to find the fish you’re aiming to catch. Some of the saltwater fish you’ll find are Spotted Seatrout, Mackerel (King and Spanish), Grouper (Gag, Red, Black and Yellowfin), Scamp, Striped Bass, Flounder, Banded Rudderfish and Tuna (Yellowfin and Bigeye). Some of your options for freshwater game fish are Trout, Black Bass, Crappie, Temperate Bass, Pickerel and Perch. And some of the freshwater non-game fish you’ll find are Catfish, Sturgeon, Topminnow, Silverside, Carp, Minnows, Pygmy Sunfish, Anchovy, Sucker, Paddlefish, Freshwater Eel, Sculpin and Cavefish. So there are lots of options no matter what you’re after.

There are a couple of areas that are both freshwater and saltwater, depending on where you are. Here’s a link to show the boundaries and the numbers to call if you’re not sure: https://www.outdooralabama.com/saltwater-recreational-licenses/saltwater-freshwater-license-boundary

For freshwater fishing you’ll want to go to a lake, reservoir, river or pond. Some of the rivers are Dog River, Fowl River, Fish River and Perdido River. For the saltwater fishing you can go as far out as the Gulf of Mexico, Mississippi Sound or any of the surrounding bays. You can also find saltwater fishing on some of the rivers inland before they become freshwater. Check the link above to make sure you know where that boundary is.

Whether you’re a freshwater fisherman, a saltwater fisherman or both, Talladega County offers some of the best places to fish in Alabama. There are great options for all kinds of fish and many areas to find them. So grab your fishing reel, your bait and your license and enjoy the great outdoors doing what you love! Happy fishing!
