The Rim of the World Highway – San Bernardino County

Looking for an experience that will give you some thrill and excitement all from the seat of your car?  Check out the Rim of the World Highway in San Bernardino County with breathtaking views and incredible scenery.   The highway climbs to almost 7,000 feet in elevation and on a clear day you can see the surrounding mountains, forests, and the entire city of San Bernardino.  The impressive journey from the desert to the mountains will give you a taste of the extremes in both environments.

The Rim of the World Highway is the primary route into the San Bernardino Mountains.   Traveling the ridge lines from Cajon Pass to San Gorgonio Pass, there is no shortage of steep drops and sharp switchbacks.   Most of the 110 mile route has been signed and recognized since 1917 and begins at the Mormon Rocks Fire Station and ends at the Redlands.  With serene views and crisp mountain air, you will definitely want to stop at a couple of the vehicle pull-offs to step out and take some pictures.

There are some beautiful spots to stop along the way including some spectacular lakes and forests.  One of our favorite spots is the Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa.  Just a short detour off State Route 173, Lake Arrowhead is a beautiful deep blue mountain lake with first class resort and lodging to relax and get in some solid R&R. There are some other cool scenic viewpoints to check out along the way, as well as access points to other beautiful areas such as Silverwood Lake and Big Bear Lake.

The Rim of the World Highway drive is usually open year round and the roads are suitable for all vehicle types – however, in the winter, you probably want a 4-wheel drive to be safe and chains are required when there is snow on the ground.  And be sure to keep your eye out for all the incredible wildlife – sightings of Bald Eagles are not uncommon!
