If you’re thinking about camping in Tehama County, it’s an excellent spot because the weather is beautiful all year round! It’s in between the Oregon and Sacramento borders and offers amazing options for an active/outdoors lifestyle. It’s the central point of a widespread recreational area with hiking, golfing, hunting, fishing, scenic tours, and boating.

The Sacramento River flows through the central area and is renowned for being one of the world’s largest salmon spawning locations. There are more than 300 miles of trails, including the Pacific Crest Trail, which stretches for 17 miles. The Lassen Volcanic National Park is 45 miles to the east. There are many recreational options in Tehama County.

One of the best ways to experience the natural beauty of California is to spend time camping here. Check out my 3 favorite places to camp in Tehama County below.

Lassen Volcanic National Park

Lassen Volcanic National Park is known for the wildflowers-freckled meadows, numerous volcanoes, clear mountain lakes, and steaming fumaroles. You will see plenty of amazing views and enjoy hydrothermal sites like Bumpass Hell. On the summit of Lassen Peak Volcano, you get a breathtaking view of the surrounding wilderness and nearby, lava rocks sprinkled across the Devastated Area. A labyrinth of trails through wooded areas and around gorgeous lakes will get you back to the Pacific Crest Trail in the north.

Lassen Volcanic has a number of campgrounds. The campsites all have picnic tables and grills, but some offer additional accommodations for a modern camping experience. There are no RV hookups. Check out their website for seasonal information and to make a reservation and get more details. Take a trip to Lassen Volcanic National Park and experience one of the best places to camp in California.

Tehama Wildlife Area

Tehama Wildlife Area is approximately 44,500 acres of grassland, oak woodland, and chaparral. There are also rugged canyons throughout the area. This area is a winter range for black-tailed deer, but you’ll also find wild pigs and turkeys. You’ll also see bald and golden eagles, prairie and peregrine falcons.

It’s an awesome place to camp under the stars and be surrounded by nature! There are tons of primitive camping spots here. You can wake up early, head out fishing or hunting, or hit the hiking/biking trails.

The most popular camping areas are Antelope Creek, South Antelope Campground, and Mill Creek Park. If you want to bring an RV, take a look at Ponderosa Ridge Resort and RV Park.

Buckhorn Recreation Area

For a nice, quiet location, look no further than the Buckhorn Recreation Area! It’s run by the Army Corps of Engineers and is known for being extremely well kept and quiet. You can camp directly overlooking the Black Butte Lake and launch your kayaks right from the campsite! Take a boat on the lake and reel in fish to cook over the campfire for dinner. If you’re looking for more adventure, you can hike and bike all around the area’s 13 miles of fitness trails. There’s also an 18-hole disc golf course nearby if you’re into hucking frisbees through the woods!

There are 93 campsites in the park, but come prepared because they do not provide electric or water. There is also a boat ramp complex, two playgrounds, and an exercise area. Make your reservations here and prepare for an amazing trip!

Tehama County is too beautiful to miss! So pack up the family, bring your tent, bicycles, fishing rods and anything you’ll need, and get ready for an awesome adventure! You’ll make some great memories, so mark your calendars and come on out!
