Off-Roading in Pima County, AZ

Want an exhilarating adventure activity that allows you to explore new areas, go where few have gone before, and view some incredible scenery…all from the seat of your vehicle? Time to get off-road with a 4WD off-roading adventure. In Pima County, AZ there are all types of trails and experiences right outside your back door – from beginners to skilled experts, there is something for everyone.

One of our favorite trails is Gunsight Pass. There is a 4WD road in the Santa Rita Mountains inside Coronado National Forest that leads to a pass that looks like a gunsight – hence the name. The trail is pretty moderate so it’s a great place to start for beginners looking to test their skills with a 4WD. If you take the route off Santa Rita road, it travels through an old ghost mining town, Helvetia, where you can see some ruins from the old town on your way. Note that one of the original routes to the top has been closed off by the new Rosemont Mine, but there is another fun route that jogs around the Mine and will get you to the top.  The trail runs about 30 miles but can take 3-4 hours so make sure you take along some provisions.

On the north side of Tucson, there is a fun trail over Redington Pass that takes you over the northwest side of Rincon Mountain. So, there are a number of secondary roads that are a little more technical and might challenge some drivers. On the west side of the pass, lookout for Tanque Verde Falls where some of the more adventurous explores go cliff jumping. Once you get to the top, there are beautiful views of the city of Tucson and the Santa Catalina Mountains.

Whether you are going north or south, get off-road with a 4WD vehicle and see all that Pima County, AZ has to offer. With all the beautiful mountains and national forest land in Pima County, AZ, you have plenty of options to explore. Be sure to check conditions and know your limits. Always have a plan and be safe out there.
